Holiday Program

Southgate has some wonderful budding musicians who are performing today! Our Dragon Jam and Glee Club will be performing at Southgate today (December 13th) at 2:15 pm and 7:00 pm. Come and enjoy the Christmas spirit our students spread! This is also a great opportunity to drop off your Giving Tree gifts or small stocking items (take small items to your child's classroom).

 

Also, Southgate is collecting nonperishable food items as part of the Annual KSD Food Drive. All items will be donated to the Kennewick Food Bank. Friday, December 14th (tomorrow!) is the last day to donate. We appreciate your willingness to help those in need!

Join us in the library for Donuts with Dragons on Thursday, November 15th from 7:30-8:30 am. Enjoy eating breakfast with your child while browsing the many book titles (and other fun stuff!) for sale at the book fair. Students must be accompanied by an adult family member.

This week our Southgate Library is kicking off the Annual Fall Book Fair! The Book Fair is open before and after school as well as during your students lunch for book purchases. Come visit during your conference for great Holiday Gift ideas!

Volunteers are still needed to do a 1-2hr shift on Friday 11/16 (11am-4pm) and Monday 11/19 (12-7pm). Please reply with your availability. The funds generated from our Book Fair are used for purchasing NEW books for our students!

Giving Tree

The first annual Giving Tree is almost here! We have gathered a "wish list" from several Southgate families. Die-cut ornaments will adorn the Giving Tree. Each ornament will hold the name of a requested item. Parents are encouraged to remove an ornament from the tree, purchase the item listed on back, then return the wrapped gift and fix the die-cut ornament to the present. Gifts should be returned to the tree by Dec. 14th. Look for the Giving Tree during conference week!. The children can also contribute to the Giving Tree by purchasing smaller items such as books, candy or school supplies. They can place these items in boxes, located in their classroom. Thank you for your support!

PINK Day

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. In support of this international health campaign, tomorrow (Halloween!) is PINK Day at Southgate Elementary. Wear pink to honor those who have been affected by breast cancer and as a reminder that early detection is our best weapon.

Good Morning Dragons and Families!

Our annual Jog-a-thon is today (October 19th) and we are very excited to see all of our awesome dragons running, skipping, walking and dancing around the course. 

A few things to remember:

1. Send a water bottle with your child. The PTG will also have water available.

2. We will be running outside on our Southgate field, rain or shine (the forecast is looking great!).

3. All donation envelopes MUST be returned with a parent's signature TODAY.

4. Parents are welcome! You are encouraged to run and cheer for your child. You can also help as a volunteer.

5. There will be a morning session for am kindergarten from 10-11 am. There will be an afternoon session for all grades including pm kindergarten from 1:45-3:00 pm.

Box Tops

The Box Tops competition ends today.

Box Tops

We're in the middle of our Fall Box Tops Contest! Please clip and send all Box Top Coupons with your student.

 

All year Southgate Elementary will be collecting Box Top Coupons to raise money for our school. Did you know that some local schools raise thousands of dollars for their schools each year, just from clipping and submitting Box Tops? Box Top coupons are on the packaging of hundreds of participating products that you probably use every day. All you need to do is cut them off of the box they are on, stick them in a baggie, and send them to school with your child. The classroom that collects the most box tops by Tuesday, October 16th will win a party of their choosing, so be sure to include your child’s teacher’s name with the box tops you turn in! We will be collecting Box Tops all year long! Be sure to track our progress at www.boxtops4education.com. Thanks for choosing to support our school by collecting Box Tops!

Jogathon Update

Our Southgate Jogathon is a week away! Donation envelopes have been sent home with all students. Please contact us immediately if your student has not brought theirs home. Donation Envelopes are due by OCTOBER 19th.

 

Parent Signature is required on envelopes!

WHAT is a Jogathon? The Jogathon is an annual school-wide fundraiser held each fall. In the two weeks preceding the event, Southgate Elementary students collect pledges from family and friends. On the day of the event, the students run, skip and walk for 50 minutes around a specifically designed course while families and friends cheer them on. Students are supported with water, staff and family supervisors!

 

WHY have a Jog-a-thon? The funds raised are dedicated directly to our students and staff by sponsoring: Health & Fitness, Art, Music, the Library, the Classroom with curriculum and equipment, Assemblies and a whole lot more. Southgate Elementary parents have a long tradition of supporting the staff and students at Southgate.

Kate McMullan

In just two days we will have the privilege of welcoming Kate McMullan to Southgate!

 

Kate started her path to become a writer by being a voracious reader as a child. After college and graduate school, she taught fourth grade in inner-city Los Angeles and on an American Air Force base in Germany. She read to her students every day and began to wonder if she could write books for kids. By taking a job in publishing in New York, "where the writers are," she had the time and energy to try writing. There she met a wonderful illustrator named Jim McMullan, whom she married. She kept writing even after their daughter was born. She badgered her husband to illustrate one of her stories, "I Stink." She has received many awards for her books, and continues to collaborate with Jim.

 

She is coming on OCTOBER 10th (this Wednesday)! She will be talking to Southgate students about reading and the writing process. Learn more about Kate at her website: http://katemcmullan.com/.

 

If you would like to purchase her books, an order form was sent home with your child. Please return it to the library by October 9th (tomorrow!).If you lost the order form, please come to the library and ask for another one. Jog-a-thon

As you may know our seventh annual Jog-A-Thon is coming up on Friday, Oct 19th. This is our primary school fundraiser and is fun day at Southgate! To make this event be such a success and run smoothly we need the support of many hands. We are asking for volunteers to assist with this event. We'll need people in the morning to assist with AM Kinder & Life Skills, from 9:30-11:00 am. We'll need the majority of the help in the afternoon to help with PM Kinder & grades 1-5, from 1:30-3:00 pm. Please respond back if you are able to help make this years Jog-A Thon a great day for Southgate & commit to helping in the morning or afternoon.

Back to School Night

Can you believe it's that time of year already? School is starting in less than a week and Back to School Night is tonight, Thursday, August 23rd at 6 pm.

Meet your teachers, bring your supplies, connect with old friends. We look forward to seeing you there!

Field Day

Field Day is TODAY! 

This is an ALL DAY event with each class rotating outside in the morning and afternoon. The weather forecast is for wind and afternoon showers. Please dress your student for being outside ALL DAY. We will immediately bring all students inside for lightning and thunder!

Thank you to all the fantastic families who have volunteered to help. Check in for ALL Shifts is on the basketball court (AM by 8:30am; PM by 12:30pm). Preschool and kindergarten siblings are welcome to stay with you while you volunteer at events. Please DO NOT go to your students classroom!

All day long there will be a NEED for volunteers, if you are only able to attend part of the event, or did not sign up to help ... PLEASE still join us! Come check in at the brown CHECK IN tent near the basketball court for assignments.

Thank you to EVERYONE who is making this an incredible event! Water balloons should be brought to the basketball court by 8:30am.

We would love to see you at our All School Picnic on Wednesday, May 30th! Lunch times are staggered by grade level and will be your child's normal lunch time. We will be eating on the grass near the playground areas. You may want to bring a blanket or chair to sit on. We look forward to seeing you there!

Tonight (3/19/2012) is the Southgate Skate Night at Rollarena in Richland. Come join us for a fun evening of skating and hanging out with friends. We'll be there from 6:30-8:30 pm. The cost is $4 per student for traditional skates; $2 extra for rollerblades.

Visit the Panda Express on Hwy 395 in Kennewick this Friday, March 16, between 4-8, and Panda Express will donate 20% of your purchase to the Southgate 5th Graders to help with the cost of their 5th grade party. All proceeds will be used to offset the cost of the party to make it accessible to all 5th graders regardless of their ability to pay.

Skating at Rollarena

Our next skate night at the Rollarena in Richland is Monday, March 19th from 6:30-8:30 pm. The cost is $4 per student for traditional skates; roller blades are $2 extra. Come have some fun skating with your friends from Southgate!

Panda Express Fundraiser

Southgate is having a Panda Express Fundraiser on March 16th between 4 and 8 pm. Orange Chicken anyone? The location for our fundraiser is the Panda Express located near the corner of Hwy 395 and Clearwater Ave. This fundraiser is benefiting the Southgate 5th graders.

Panda Express will donate 20% of each purchase when the purchaser presents a flyer or tells the person at the register they are supporting Southgate 5th graders.

Read to Silverwood

As you know March is read across America month; why not read your way to Silverwood on your way across America?

Students will track their reading minutes each day while they read their way across America. The more minutes they read, the farther they will go! Each student who reads 600 minutes will earn a free ticket to Silverwood Theme Park. Silverwood reading logs have been sent home, don't forget to fill them out and turn them in on or before March 26th!

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!

Students who purchased Dr. Seuss hats may wear their hat to school today. We will have birthday cake and sing Happy Birthday to Dr. Seuss during lunchtime. PTG will have a few additional hats sale for $5 each, before school only (3/1).

Book Mark Challenge (March 1st-9th)

Students can show their creativity by designing a Creative Book Mark in COLOR; Showing their LOVE of reading! Have your bookmark ready on or before March 9th.

Dr. Seuss Birthday and Read Across America Month

Come celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday this Thursday, March 1st as we kick off Read Across America month! Students who purchased Dr. Seuss hats may wear their hat to school on this day (March 1st). We will have birthday cake and sing Happy Birthday to Dr. Seuss during lunch time. The PTG has a few additional hats for sale for $5 each, available before school on 3/1.

Washington Achievement Award

Southgate Elementary is a recipient of the 2011

Washington Achievement Award!

"The Washington Achievement Awards celebrate the state's top-performing schools in multiple categories. Award-winning schools share at least one common attribute: the power to profoundly affect student learning." Washington's elementary, middle, high and comprehensive schools are examined using, "the Achievement Index, a database that provides a clear and comprehensive analysis of Washington schools performance."

Southgate is being recognized for Closing Achievement Gaps. Southgate's performance shows that we are Exemplary (top tier of the index) in this category. To learn more about the Washington Achievement Awards please visit the Education Awards page of the OSPI website. An awards ceremony will be held in April to celebrate the achievements of all schools receiving awards this year.

Southgate is one of a handful of other eastern Washington schools to be honored with a Washington Achievement Award. Way to go Southgate Dragons!! The PTG would like to thank our wonderful teachers, faculty, staff, students and parents! This award reflects the efforts of those who are working to make and keep Southgate an excellent place to learn.

Dr. Seuss Hats

On March 1st, Southgate will kick-off Read Across America Month with a birthday celebration in honor of Dr. Seuss. The PTG is pre-ordering Dr. Seuss hats for students to wear on this special, event-filled day. If you would like to order a hat for your child(ren) please return the yellow order form that came home with your child. Hats are $5 each.

Please order by Thursday, February 16th (yes, that's tomorrow!).
